In this talk I will give a survey to the classification schemes of smooth manifolds.
A smooth manifold is a topological space that is locally similar to an Euclidean space and allows to do calculus.
The classification of smooth manifolds is a basic question with a long history.
In principle, low dimensional manifolds are classified by geometry structure and high dimensional manifolds are classified algebraically, by surgery theory. Dimension 4 is the middle dimension in this story. There are spectacular results about smooth 4-dimensional manifolds but many mysteries remain.
